This weekend we are going to two different 'crags'!

Dave (/ɑf/ not /deɪv/ like in english) is an almost 80 meter dolomite face near the river Maas. It is known for its characteristic 'gatenkaas' ('cheese with holes' , I guess, there is no real English word for it) structure, or more accurately, lack there of. It is quite juggy with lots of big incut pockets. It has some slabby parts but most of it is vertical till almost 10 degrees overhanging. This means moves can be physical and big, almost like indoor climbing, but than more fun. The average grade here is around 5a so it is a great place for a first experience outdoors! For those a bit more versed in outdoor climbing, there are still two projects, rumoured to be around the middle of the 8th range, so for the singlepitchers joining, give em a go!

And about Freyr (for which I am not going to add IPA pronunciation guide as finding /ɑf/ took me long enough), what is there to say I have yet said. It is the biggest, most expansive set of falaises of Belgium, and also the capital of Belgian hard climbing. If you spend enough time here, you will probably here the chaotic singing and fluting of the Belgian legends, Sean Villanueva O'Driscoll and his partner Nico Favresse, or the powerscreaming of Simon Lorenzi or Seb Berthe.

Freyr is philosophised to be the reason the Belgians are such a powerhouse on the international circuit, whether it comes to indoor bouldering or bigwalling in patagonia. My local slabmaster taught me as a kid that once one can stand in Freyr, he can climb on any outdoor rock. So yes, great place to learn. It's immense height is also a reason it is popular, up to and including 4 pitch routes, something quite unique for Belgian standards.

Keep in mind that for joining this weekend your single pitch license is required.

Also keep in mind that this is a weekend in Belgium thus a klimjaarkaart is required to climb.
